This summer, I am working with the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion, researching the effects of child abuse and discipline. I have always been curious about how and why certain health disparities exist, so I’m grateful to have this opportunity to come up with our own observational experiment to test one of these health disparities. I am working with one other researcher, who is the same year as me. We started by researching the many articles on this topic. We found information about this topic from all over the world. I found it interesting that the countries we observed who practice corporal punishment are looking for ways to combat the negative effects that this brings to adolescence. After reading the articles, we created a survey and an abstract on how to go about observing the effects of child discipline in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas.
