This weekend was the first day in a month that I’ve gotten to sleep in. With work and weekend trips, I feel like sleep and rest have gotten pushed to the back burner.
Not that I’m complaining. It’s been a great time so far. I’ve been doing all different kinds of work, gotten a lot of face time in with the students – who, by the way, are all amazingly hardworking and sociable – and seen more of France than I’d dreamed.
Still, the main challenge of this internship has not been the work in the office; it’s been finding a healthy balance. It is so easy to get caught up in all of the amazing things that people are doing, to travel constantly, to become absorbed in my work and in being there for the students, that I forget to be there for myself sometimes.
I have found a few things that help me clear my head space.
I play piano in a chapel at the bottom of the hill. It’s open to use for HEC students for worship, and I use it to reconnect with my musical side. The reverb is amazing.
I run, though not as much as I’d like to. I only brought two shirts to run in, which is very limiting. But about two times a week I’ll go on a run around campus: down to the lake, out to the soccer fields, in a winding loop around the residences. It helps me to refocus and feel strong and healthy.
Finally, the other interns have been so kind. In the short time that we’ve been here, we’ve become like a little family. I know I can count on them for whatever I need, and they can count on me for the same. We’ve also shared some interesting stories while on our weekend trips, but that might be a story for another day.
