As the need for STEM employees grows each year, this article touches on the need to unleash untapped potential and create STEM opportunities for underrepresented communities. Students from Detroit Edison Academy participated in national STEM competitions and were able to enhance and learn new engineering skills, meet other students with similar backgrounds, and go home with scholarship money for their interests.

There’s a gender gap in the STEM field but there’s an even greater gap when it comes to minorities. There are so many young kids who have the interests and the capabilities for STEM but need the exposure and resources to pursue those interests. It makes me happy to know that Detroit is making strides to narrow that gap by encouraging students to be apart of National STEM Challenges and providing the necessary resources to accomplish that.
