My internship is an Mcubed fellowship research opportunity. I’m currently working on investigating the role of transcription factor Foxp1 in cardiovascular disease, specifically cardiac hypertrophy. My goals this summer have been to generally develop better and more efficient laboratory skills, learn how to set up my own experiments, and better understand why a protocol is designed the way it is in research. More specific to Foxp1 and cardiovascular disease, I would like to understand how it affects proliferation and differentiation in embryonic cardiomyocytes. In adult mice, I’d like to understand how one of its expressed proteins, pERK1, affects the symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy when it is upregulated or downregulated.
