One way my internship differed from my expectation was that there is a lot more writing involved in banking than I had initially expected. It helps to be comfortable with numbers and to like analytical thinking, but I actually think the analytical part of my job so far has been the easiest, and what is most difficult is communicating my thoughts and writing well. Another thing which has surprised me is how much the internship is just about learning about the industry and getting to know different people. Initially, I thought the work I produced would be the most important aspect of my internship, but now I realize that networking, showing interest, and learning about different areas of the bank are just as important. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by these things which I’ve learned at my internship.
