Recently the lab manager of the lab I am working in left. This has left me with the responsibility to teach the new employee many of the tasks, equipment, and experiments we do on a regular basis and help him get up to speed with our current projects.
This has placed me in a position I have never been in before. I have spent most of my research career with less experience with those around me, now I have found myself teaching new Graduate students and lab managers in our lab. This has provided me the opportunity to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of concepts which we employ daily in the lab. After spending years learning from others I am not teaching people experiments and concepts I have mastered. Moreover, I have been one of few at the university to become trained on the transition electron microscope. While difficult, it is a unique skill that is very useful in my line of research.
I am looking forward to what the future yet holds.
