I’ve always known that research is expensive, but I didn’t really understand just how expensive until I started working here. Even the most mundane items cost a surprising amount- for example, a bottle of growth media costs several hundred dollars. I’ll be honest, it was downright alarming learning how much the equipment in the lab costs- basic items like centrifuges cost thousands, and the microscope in the lab costs tens of thousands of dollars. One machine (an automatic pipetting robot) has a sign attached saying that it is valued at over $400,000. While I was never careless, I’m certainly much more careful with the equipment around the lab now than I used to be- it’s one thing to take time by messing up an experiment, but it’s completely another to make a mistake that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars!
