For me, one of the most important things I have observed from my internship is the value of building a team. Throughout this summer, I watched my supervisor as he called up people within his network — people to do his carpeting, get furniture, paint his floors — for all sorts of odd jobs, often providing their services at a discount. Moreover, not only do they provide good services, having had years of experiences working with my supervisor, the quality of their services ends up being better as well.
As I try to reading through more business literature this summer, especially business biographies, the value of the team came up frequently as well. Whether the subjects be financiers, tech giants, or 19th-century monopolists, these guys all have a network of people with talent and skills that they can tap into. Whether it be business or politics, the African proverb that “if you want to go far, go together” really rings true.
