Over the last few weeks, I have found a special mentor. The first mentor I found was Camila Nelson. She was the organizer of the Summer Wellness Camp. Throughout the camp she allowed me to cultivate my teaching skills with occasional guidance from the sidelines. I also learned a lot from watching her, but also just from our conversations during breaks. One of our conversation that stood out to me was when she talked to me about her experience with working with non-profit organizations. She’s been a part of and worked for non-profits around Detroit all her love. One very special on to her was Detroit Police Athletic League (aka. PAL). She discussed how important it is for organizations to be connected to the people’s wants and needs and to be vigilant of the effects of that disconnect. She also encouraged to consider grant writing for an organization later on because of my love of writing and working with non-profits.
