I am very thankful that I got the chance to work at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center. It helped me grow as a person. I learned that when working at non-profit or social justice related job, I need to be patient and perform self care. My perspective has changed because I have a new understanding of immigration and people’s life circumstances.
When I was helping our clients with their applications and documents I would read their declarations which sometimes included their life stories. I read and heard about the violence and poverty that our clients have faced. It was shocking and upsetting. It’s hard to comprehend that people like myself live such comfortable safe lives while others are forced to endure abuse and neglect. I already had an awareness of my own privilege but reading the actual stories of people was impactful.
